Students from India enrolled in US institutions can breathe a sigh of relief as they are exempted from the recently announced US travel restrictions for those coming from India.
Those who have valid F-1 and M-1 student visas will be allowed to enter, provided they get to US borders no earlier than 30 days before their program starts.
President Biden issued the proclamation banning incoming travelers from India on April 30. US Press Secretary Jen Psaki cites the “extraordinarily high COVID-19 caseloads and multiple variants circulating in India” as the reason for the new policy.
Countries like Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, New Zealand, Oman, the UAE, and the UK have similar restrictions for travelers from India in place.
Aside from F-1 and M-1 visa holders, other exempted categories include U.S. citizens or permanent residents and their spouses, humanitarian workers, journalists, and academics.
The travel ban officially started at 12:01 am Eastern Daylight Time on May 4 and will remain indefinitely.
