As staff continue to work hard to remove snow, Vancouver Island University (VIU) is anticipating all campuses and facilities to reopen on Friday, Jan. 7, according to the recent evening update released by the institution.

VIU further instructed the university community not to start traveling to campus until they hear from the institution at 6:30 a.m. tomorrow, as snow removal efforts are ongoing.

Key Takeaways:

  • In the face of severe weather, all campuses and facilities of Vancouver Island University (VIU) are expected to reopen on Jan. 7.
  • The university community was also told not to travel to campus until they heard from the institution at 6:30 a.m. tomorrow,
  • When evaluating whether or not they are permitted to enter if the campus is open, students are asked to use their best judgment.

Because of severe weather, the Nanaimo campus, Cowichan campus, Trades Centre, Powell River Campus, Parksville Centre, and G.R. Paine Horticultural Centre will remain closed for the remainder of Jan. 6.

Meanwhile, the Milner Gardens & Woodland is closed as regularly scheduled. VIU also noted that some could work and study remotely while the campuses and facilities are closed because of extreme weather.

Should the members of the VIU community need advice or direction and are not sure, they are encouraged to ask their instructors.

VIU students are encouraged to use their best judgment when determining whether or not they are permitted to enter if the campus is open, given the region’s many micro-climates and snow accumulation.

Students are asked to notify their professors if they cannot attend class, and allowances will be made for missing work and tests.
