Vancouver Island University (VIU) will add two new resources through provincial government financing, which will focus on attracting more firms to recruit students and assisting students in becoming more successful in work experience placements.

Co-ops and work-integrated learning (WIL) programs will receive CA$5.5 million in one-time financing from the Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Training.

Key Takeaways:

  • VIU will enhance work-integrated learning opportunities for students thanks to provincial government financing.

VIU will receive CA$175,000 to recruit a Career Service Officer and an Employer and Student Engagement Officer.

The funds will also be used to continue the development of the Vancouver Island Work-Integrated Learning (VIWIL) initiative, which the government first financed in 2019.

VIWIL is a collaboration between VIU and North Island College that connects employers with students on Vancouver Island north of the Malahat to improve chances for work-integrated learning.

According to Danielle Johnsrude, Director of the Centre for Experiential Learning, both the Employer and Student Engagement Officer and the Career Service Officer will be critical in advancing the VIWIL project.

The officers will help increase student engagement with work-integrated learning opportunities and the number of employers actively hiring students and in implementing certain career service initiatives.

The new Employer and Student Engagement Officer’s job is to find employers in central and north Vancouver Island to help students improve and expand their work-integrated learning opportunities.
