Intending to advance the scholarship opportunities for Latinx students, the University of Central Florida (UCF) has joined a new, national consortium that includes 16 U.S. Hispanic-Serving Institutions that are top-tier doctoral universities with very high research activity.
Apart from the advancement of Latinx scholarships, UCF’s joining the consortium will also advance the field of Latino studies and an alliance that supports the growth and success of women and Latinx in the fields of computing.
Key Takeaways:
- UCF joins the 16 U.S. Hispanic Serving Institutions, a national consortium that will help the institution advance Latinx scholarships.
- UCF also joined the Computing Alliance of Hispanic-Serving Institutions.
- Grants for both the consortium and alliance initiatives have started on Oct. 1.
The 16 U.S. Hispanic-Serving Institutions included in the consortium have been designated by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education to be the institutions that perform high research activity.
The first initiative of the consortium is the “Crossing Latinidades: Emerging Scholars and New Comparative Directions,” which was awarded a three-year, $5 million grant by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. The initiative aims to increase the number of Latinx students pursuing terminal degrees and advancing to careers in academia.
UCF also recently joined the Computing Alliance of Hispanic-Serving Institutions (CAHSI), which was awarded a three-year, $2.9 million grant from the U.S. National Science Foundation.
Becoming a member of the CAHSI has helped the institution support the growth of underrepresented and underserved student populations, particularly women and Latinx, in computing.
As one of the 15 member institutions, UCF has also helped advance a research-based framework that attracts and supports students through the completion of graduate degrees.
Being a part of the CAHSI will allow UCF to join a network that envisions responding to the barriers faced by underrepresented populations in computing and STEM fields.
Grants for both the consortium and alliance initiatives started on Oct. 1.
