The University of Canterbury (UC) aims to boost students’ results in the National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA) levels 1, 2, and 3 through the UCMeXL, an outreach program delivered by the University of Canterbury Pacific Development Team and Pacific Liaison Office.

Although the initiative has been running successfully for over a decade already, more and more Pacific students are signing up for a free tutoring program to achieve higher results in the NCEA—marking the highest participation rate in recent years.

Key Takeaways:

  • UC extends its support to students through a free tutoring program that aims to help them achieve higher results in NCEA Levels 1, 2, and 3.
  • UC drew more participants and is looking forward to catering to more students in the following sessions.
  • NZ’s National Certificates of Educational Achievement (NCEA) are national qualifications for senior secondary school students.

Formerly getting 60-70 student intake, the free study sessions held at the university’s Ilam campus now welcome hundreds of students a day.

According to UC Pacific Engagement Coordinator Viane Makalio, they anticipate the number of students to grow even more significantly for the upcoming October school holidays program, despite the timeframe being typically busy as the school year is about to end. The latest lockdown is also likely to increase the demand as students seek to make up for time missed at school.

Based on students’ feedback, this university initiative significantly impacted their results, noting that the tutoring sessions have helped them get back on track and opened their eyes to opportunities.

Through the efforts and alumni donations from the University of Canterbury Foundation, the program continues to help students not only in terms of tutoring but also with their meals and transport to and from different locations, a welcoming approach that students also commended.

UC continues to promote the program to provide greater opportunities for students.
