Organizers of the 2021 Aotearoa Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Summit have shifted the event online. Set for Sept. 2, the summit brings together political and thought leaders from governments, the private sector, civil society and international organizations.

In one of many pivots happening around New Zealand during the current public health crisis brought about by the pandemic, this transition to online platforms has made the SDG summit more accessible for interested attendees.

Key Takeaways:

  • This year’s Aotearoa Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Summit online shift draws more accessibility for interested participants.
  • The summit is supposedly a two-day in-person event at the University of Canterbury.
  • The summit includes 12 interactive learning workshops of action-planning, networking, and short-project showcases.

The SDG Summit, which features a series of high-level meetings to turn the 10 years leading up to the 2030 deadline for achieving the SDGs into a decisive decade of action and delivery, is supposedly a two-day in-person event at the University of Canterbury.

Because of the current circumstances, the summit has been transformed into a virtual event, with the first allocation of 500 tickets snapped up in a few days.

The 2021 Aotearoa Sustainable Development Goals Summit carries the theme of Collaboration for Systemic Change, enabling participants to share knowledge on developing plans for local, regional, or national action around specific SDGs.

According to Matt Morris, Sustainability Advisor at the University of Canterbury, this global disruption is just what the 17 SDGs are designed to mitigate. That is why they are working responsively to move into an uncertain future.

The team has prepared 12 interactive online workshops that explore collaborative action planning. Participants can attend breakout sector-based kōrero, networking activities, and short project showcases.

During the summit, the SDG Declaration for Aotearoa will be co-created through participants’ collective contributions and commitments in establishing positive change in their communities.
