The University of Portsmouth can now expand global opportunities for its students through the Turing Scheme, a new funding of nearly £700,000 that will provide work and study placements of between four weeks to 12 months during the academic year 2021-2022.

Portsmouth will be joining other universities in the United Kingdom that have replaced their participation in the European Union’s Erasmus+ program by signing up for the Turing student mobility program.

Key Takeaways:

  • The University of Portsmouth joins other UK universities in the Turing scheme that allows students to experience global study and work opportunities.
  • Portsmouth students, especially those from underprivileged backgrounds, can pursue their international education in more than 150 countries.
  • The Turing scheme is the UK Government’s global program.

Under the Turing scheme, Portsmouth students will be able to pursue their international education in more than 150 countries across the globe. They will get funding to cover their living costs, travel expenses, and visas.

According to Chris Chang, the university’s deputy vice-chancellor for Global Engagement and Student Life, they are full of excitement to award the funding, which will enable their students to maximize the experiences and activities of living, studying, and working abroad.

Chang added that their 2025 Strategy concerning their commitment to engage students with life-changing experiences aligns with the Turing scheme, which extends its assistance to students to participate in such career-enhancing endeavors.

The Turing scheme is the UK Government’s global program, which Education Secretary Gavin Williamson considers as support for the new generation of international students to attain opportunities around the world, such as the United States, Australia, and South Korea.

While Portsmouth is still an active participant in the Erasmus+ program until May 2023, the new Turing scheme will be in place. It can be noted that the Turing student mobility program marked a 53 percent increase in university students from the previous 18,300 under Erasmus+ from 2018 to 2019.
