Griffith University (CRICOS Provider No. 00233E) urges the Queensland government to establish a timeframe for the end of mandatory COVID quarantine for fully vaccinated international students.

Sarah Todd, Griffith’s vice-president (global), expressed concern that Queensland would lose students to interstate colleges.

Key Takeaways:

  • The Queensland government is pushed to set a deadline for removing COVID quarantine for fully vaccinated international students.

  • It is a concern that Queensland would lose students to interstate colleges.

  • Griffith is hoping for an update and “some clarification,” following the meeting of Queensland universities and state government representatives.

The Griffith executive cited that New South Wales and Victoria had already abolished quarantine for double-vaccinated international travelers. This is a cause for concern after Australia lost thousands of international students to Canada and the United Kingdom this year.

It has been noted that Queensland needs to heed the demand to provide certainty to vaccinated students about when they could fly into the state without having to go through quarantine.

Moreover, differences in state and federal lines need clarification, especially since some international students have been confused by the country’s fragmented quarantine measures for international visitors.

Fully vaccinated international arrivals in Queensland will not be required to quarantine once 90 percent of people over the age of 16 have been double-dosed, which is expected by mid-January.

However, unlike the reduction of interstate border rules, the Queensland government has not established a timeframe for abolishing the quarantine need for overseas immigrants, regardless of the state’s vaccination rate.

Professor Todd was hoping for an update and “some clarification” from the meeting of colleagues from other Queensland universities and state government representatives.

Apart from being a “major export earner for Queensland,” international students are considered the key drivers of enriching the state’s multicultural society.
