Florida International University (FIU) will be expanding its programming through the $2.25 million USD investment in CodePath by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, as Miami emerges as an international tech hub with increased demand for skilled talent.

CodePath, a national non-profit dedicated to increasing diversity in computer science and engineering, is partnering with higher education institutions to supplement their computer science curricula with industry-relevant content.

For computer science students, CodePath provides free software engineering courses, career assistance, and access to help them finish their undergraduate degree and find competitive technical jobs after graduation.

Since its founding in 2017, CodePath has helped over 10,000 students, 70% of them are Black, Latino/a, or low-income.

Michael Ellison, CEO and co-founder of CodePath, said that through the Knight partnership, they will serve and attract college students to join the tech movement and create a larger, more diverse talent pipeline for employers.

CodePath began programming at FIU in 2020 with an Android development course.

Several CodePath courses are now part of FIU’s computer science curriculum, and the nonprofit has trained almost 100 students in industry-relevant technical skills such as web and mobile programming, cybersecurity, and technical interview preparation.
