After receiving funds to build state-of-the-art simulation facilities, thousands of De Montfort University Leicester (DMU) health care students will soon have access to some of the most realistic training available.

The Office for Students (OfS) has awarded the university £2 million to improve its simulation-based teaching, learning, and assessment as part of its effort across the institution to ensure that innovative teaching approaches are utilized to practice-based learning.

Key Takeaways:

  • Thousands of De Montfort University Leicester (DMU) health care students will soon benefit from some of the most realistic training available.
  • Because of the recent increase in the use of simulation-based learning in health care education, DMU was able to acquire funding.
  • The funding will benefit 11 DMU programs and over 2,500 students.

Students were welcomed into the first state-of-the-art simulation suite on the ground floor of Heritage House earlier this year, and the new funding will see several more facilities in the Hawthorn Building restored to the highest level.

Staff and students will be able to use these practical suites to practice on patient simulators and recreate a variety of realistic scenarios without jeopardizing the safety of real patients.

All suites will be equipped with CAE Learningspace, a simulation-based training solution that provides students with a 360-degree view of their simulation training environment.

The simulation-based training solution will also allow students to view teaching sessions at any time and from any location, as well as watch recorded sessions and review their own practice.

Moreover, all suites will have modern patient simulators that can connect to the system and produce vital signs that students must respond to, followed by immediate feedback through a simulation debriefing.

The immediate feedback will enhance patient safety and ensure that students are better prepared for what they will face when practicing in the field.

The university was able to receive funding because of the recent increase in the use of simulation-based learning in health care education at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

The funding will assist 11 DMU programs and approximately 2,500 students.
