Following its launch in March, Deakin University’s Reimagined program that is designed to reimagine a sustainable and vibrant future for the institution will include a significant change to its overall structure, according to Vice-Chancellor Professor Iain Martin on Tuesday.

While the Reimagined program was set to effectively respond to the challenges Deakin may encounter in the future, it has been communicated to Deakin staff that such change proposals arose from the program.

Key Takeaways:

  • Deakin University’s Reimagined program has drawn almost 1,000 proposals from staff since its launch in March.
  • The Reimagined program aims to invest the university in a sustainable and vibrant future post-pandemic.
  • Proposed changes in the university’s overall structure are deemed necessary for Deakin to secure a financial future while delivering effective services.

It can be highlighted that since the program’s onset, the initiative has drawn almost 1,000 proposal submissions from staff, which truly shaped the program’s objective of ensuring a sustainable and vibrant university.

Martin explained that the proposed changes in the university’s overall structure were indispensable. The institution needs to secure a financial future while guaranteeing that its services are aligned, cohesive, and complement the core purposes.

Despite the tremendous challenges both Deakin and the Australian higher education sector are facing because of the pandemic, the university continues to ensure the quality of what it delivers to its students, staff, local communities, and its many networks across the globe.

Because of the collective wisdom of the members of Deakin, they were able to receive almost a thousand submissions that were deemed beneficial for the program’s objectives to establish an exemplar of what a post-pandemic university can be.

Martin also said that the university must be prepared to discuss the challenges and uncertainties of the future head-on. As the vice-chancellor articulated it, the Deakin Reimagined program is about emerging from the difficulties brought about by COVID-19 and investing in a sustainable and vibrant future for the university.

The current change proposals anticipate an estimated overall reduction in positions of between 180 and 220. However, it can be noted that no decision has been made on the change proposals.

Martin added that the university is looking forward to hearing feedback from their staff throughout the two-week consultation process, which commenced on Aug. 31 and closed on Sept. 14.

Following the consultation, another two weeks will be allotted for review and change based on the feedback received.
