Despite a looming national trend of declining college enrollment, Cleveland State University (CSU) has seen a significant increase in the overall Fall 2021 enrollment for both undergraduate and graduate programs compared to the previous year.

CSU has recently announced a 5 percent increase in first-time freshman enrollment compared with the previous records from Fall 2020 enrollment, welcoming 1,834 freshmen to the university campus. Meanwhile, graduate enrollment at CSU soared by more than 20 percent to 4,352 students.

Key Takeaways:

  • CSU has drawn a 5 percent increase in first-time freshman enrolment for Fall 2021 from the previous year.
  • CSU’s graduate enrollment has also increased by more than 20 percent to 4,352 students.
  • CSU has cited various driving factors that have led to the university’s growing reputation in the higher education sector.

Various programs and initiatives at CSU were deemed to drive the university’s freshman enrollment increase. With a growing partnership with the Cleveland Metropolitan School District (CMSD), CSU saw a 40 percent increase in the number of CMSD graduates enrolled.

Many of these students took advantage of the Say Yes to Education Cleveland program that provides full-tuition scholarships. The university’s 2-for-1 tuition promise, in which the university will cover spring semester tuition for freshmen who achieve a 3.0 or better grade point average, is also an additional driving factor for students to enroll at CSU.

CSU also noted its unique program called the Parker-Hannifin Living Learning Community that provided free room and board to 110 students. The students were housed in a supportive residential community of scholars with comprehensive wraparound services and graduation coaches.

To help incoming students and their families successfully transition from high school to college, CSU also provided a free residential experience before freshman year through the new Summer Bridge Program Enrichment Academy.

In addition, the Summer Transition Enrichment Program (STEP) has also helped the students to prepare for college-level coursework.

According to Jonathan Wehner, vice president of enrollment and dean of admissions at CSU, the university’s growth as an accessible, affordable, first-choice institution to students in Greater Cleveland and beyond is critical to the long-term economic vitality and health of Northeast Ohio.
