WLU Welcomes Grade 10 and 11 Students for Shad Laurier Program

Canada—Wilfrid Laurier University, located in Waterloo, is set to welcome 64 Grade 10 and 11 students from across Canada and the US from July 5 to 30, 2021. This will be part of the Shad Laurier program, which aims to build the skills and knowledge of high school students in the fields of science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics (STEAM), and entrepreneurship. Shad Canada has 19 campus partners, a network of 18,000 program graduates, and has been running STEAM programs since 1980.

Students part of the program will work in groups to study and discuss real-world problems, which will be announced across Canada on the second day of the Shad program. Laurier professors will be discussing the topic from different angles and perspectives. After this 20-day program, students will be presenting their solutions in front of the panel.

Even if the program’s focus is on STEAM, students will also develop critical soft skills such as critical thinking, leadership, problem-solving, communication, and even presentation skills. Students will also build connections through different team-building events.

According to Co-Program Director and Senior Recruitment Coordinator at Laurier Dana Montgomery, program participants will learn from world-class experts and be tested to think beyond what is given and tackle real-world issues. Students will also build confidence, have fun, and nurture connections.

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the program will be online. Traditionally, the students stay in university residences across the country during the program. Keynote lectures will then be shown in real-time online.

For this year’s Shad program, keynote speakers will include Eden Hennessey, Laurier’s manager of student equity, diversity and inclusion and the research and programs director at Laurier’s Centre for Women in Science; Chantal Petitclerc, a Canadian senator and gold-medal winning Paralympian; Arthur McDonald, a Nobel Prize winner and professor emeritus at Queen’s University; Toni De Mello, a human rights lawyer; and Frances Donald, the global chief economist and global head of macroeconomic strategy at Manulife Investment Management.
