To rank world universities, ARWU uses six objective indicators: the number of alumni winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, the number of staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, the number of highly cited researchers selected by Clarivate Analytics, number of articles published in journals Nature and Science, number of articles indexed in Social Sciences Citation Index and Science Citation Index-expanded, and the per capita performance of a university.
