The University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) welcomed nearly 1,000 new students during the initial move-in to campus residence halls, a refreshing change from the online classes and homestay measures necessitated by the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to Alex da Silva, associate vice chancellor for Student Affairs and executive director for Campus Auxiliary Services, the university expects to have 3,000 students moving into the six on-campus residence halls once the move-in period ends on Saturday.
Key Takeaways:
- Nearly a thousand University of Illinois Chicago students have moved into the campus residence halls on the first of four move-in days.
- Housing officials streamlined the move-in procedures to guide students and families.
- UIC continues to implement health and safety guidelines on campus and the COVID-19 vaccination disclosure requirement for students.
While there may be issues related to the pandemic, the housing officials have coordinated closely to minimize these by streamlining the move-in procedures. First, students and their families are compelled to drive up to outdoor centralized tents, where the new students are checked in.
Once the students and their families receive the keys to the rooms and residence halls, they are directed to their respective residence halls, where professional movers assist them in unpacking their belongings and bringing them to their new home.
Like other educational institutions in the United States with health and safety guidelines in place, UIC requires students to undergo saliva testing on campus after moving in. All students living in campus housing, whether vaccinated or unvaccinated, will be asked to undergo the test after moving in.
UIC students and staff are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and must disclose their vaccination status no later than Aug. 23 via UIC Healthcheck.
In terms of on-campus health and safety guidelines, students and other community members must wear a mask or face covering in common areas of all campus buildings, including residence halls.
The university acknowledged that the past year has been challenging for everyone, so it has fortified its commitment to keeping the community safe.
As a university community in the nation’s third-largest city, UIC commits to provide its members with the tools and resources to support their personal safety while on campus and in the surrounding area.
