With Germany’s economic recovery already underway and Bavaria easing up on its COVID-19 health and safety regulations, the New European College (NEC) has finally welcomed the return of students to campus.

According to Sascha Liebhardt, NEC Chancellor, having students back on campus is a great step forward, although they are still masked and urged to observe the necessary safety distance.

Key Takeaways:

  • New European College welcomed its students back on campus.
  • The NEC Chancellor considers student return to the campus as a great step forward and can be attributed to the strong vaccination campaign in the EU.
  • The new academic year at NEC will be themed around climate change.

The chancellor also recognized the success of the vaccination campaign of the European Union and the efforts of the governments of the German federal states. Liebhardt sees these as the primary driving factor that effectively brings back students to their campuses.

Liebhardt also cited Munich, which he described as already nearing the “new normal,” based on the progress of the people who have recovered from COVID-19 in the past six months, the number of people who tested negative in the last 48 hours, and people who have been fully vaccinated. Liebhardt added how Munich holds outdoor public events already with up to 25,000 participants. Moreover, schools and universities are back to their operations and activities.

Wearing face masks in shops, public transportation, libraries, and other areas, and maintaining physical distance are still mandated; meanwhile, the Bavarian government has stated that there will be no more lockdowns for those that fall under the 3G rule (Genesen, Getestet, Geimpft – Recovered, Tested, Vaccinated).

In his announcement, Leibhardt highlighted that as students return to campus and the pandemic is in its last phase, the new academic year will revolve around the biggest challenge encountered by businesses, the education sector, and the world at large: climate change.

The chancellor has announced that the kick-off for the first Project Week ‘21 at the Munich campus will be a visit to the IAA Mobility convention in the city center and at the Munich convention this September. Formerly the world’s leading automotive show, the IAA is an event where all stakeholders gather to discuss the circular economy, urban mobility, and sustainability.

The NEC will be organizing a tour for its students to visit the IAA Mobility convention on Sept. 11 so they can not only engage with the topic of sustainability but also have a peek at what is coming in 2022.
