Florida International University’s (FIU) College of Engineering and Computing will use the $3 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy to lead an initiative that will train the future generation of power, energy, and cybersecurity workforce.
The FIU grant from the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) is designated for creating the Consortium for Research and Education in Power and Energy Systems (CREPES) for Sustainable STEM Workforce.
Key Takeaways:
- FIU’s College of Engineering and Computing received a grant from the US Department of Energy amounting to $3 million.
- The grant will be used to create the Consortium for Research and Education in Power and Energy Systems (CREPES) for Sustainable STEM Workforce.
- FIU is an ideal institution to lead the consortium, given its academic offerings and multidisciplinary research capabilities in STEM.
With its academic offerings and multidisciplinary research capabilities in STEM, FIU is deemed the ideal institution to lead this important consortium.
According to John L. Volakis, dean of the College of Engineering and Computing, FIU is uniquely positioned to recruit and train a diverse student population for the future workforce that NNSA seeks since almost 80 percent of its student body is composed of minority students.
FIU students, faculty members, and researchers, alongside Alabama A&M University and the University of Texas at El Paso, will collaborate with the Sandia National Lab and the Lawrence Livermore National Lab.
Through the consortium, FIU students will be immersed in training and practical experience needed to succeed in electrical and nuclear engineering, and cyber and information security.
Moreover, FIU is recognized by the NNSA as an international leader and a top producer of Hispanic and African American engineers in the United States.
The consortium will train 48 undergraduate and six graduate students, one postdoctoral researcher, and two tenure-track assistant professors.
