Economically disadvantaged students from certain Northeast Ohio high schools will be able to pursue and complete a college degree at Cleveland State University (CSU) through an innovative new partnership with The Howley Foundation.

The Howley Foundation has long sponsored high school scholarships and primary school programming, and it has lately begun to support college scholarships. The CSU Howley Scholars program is the foundation’s first cooperation of its sort.

Key Takeaways:

  • Cleveland State University (CSU) and The Howley Foundation have formed a new innovative partnership.
  • Economically disadvantaged students will be able to seek and complete a college degree at CSU as a result of the partnership.
  • The funds will be used to assist students in covering the costs of tuition, room & board, and any expenditures not covered by financial assistance or other awards.

Under the program, The Howley Foundation and CSU will provide qualified graduates of Saint Martin de Porres, Benedictine, and Villa Angela-St. Joseph high schools up to $11,000 annually in scholarship support.

The money will be used to help students pay for tuition, lodging and board, and other expenses that are not covered by financial aid or other awards.

This type of “gap money” can make all the difference in a student’s ability to attend college. In the future, the foundation hopes to spread this initiative to more high schools.

The students will receive significant support services from both the foundation and the university in addition to financial aid.

The Howley Scholars will be a member of the university’s very successful living-learning community program, which offers a residential experience as well as academic help, graduation coaching, and other comprehensive wraparound services.

Scholars can also participate in CSU’s Summer Transition Enrichment Program (STEP), which helps students prepare for college-level coursework or simply get a jump start on their studies by preparing them for college-level courses.

Each student will be supported by an alumni coordinator from their high school through the foundation, who will offer advice on course choices and other academic support.

Students will also benefit from the coordinator’s assistance in navigating college processes such as financial aid, work-study, and internships.
