UC to Reduce Int’l Student Enrollment in 2022

United States—The University of California System is set to reduce international student intake specifically in its three top campuses, UCLA, UC Berkeley, and UC San Diego, beginning in fall 2022 to compensate for the lost income from higher out-of-state tuition.

A big decline in new international student enrollments will make room for about 4,500 additional California students for 2022. This move has tackled an issue that has long drawn heat among the citizens of California on who should get a chance to secure a seat in the nation’s premier public research university system.

It is now anticipated to inflict drastic admission reforms, most especially, for international students as it refocuses in catering to its local applicants. 

With this, UC San Diego Chancellor Pradeep Khosla asserted that “non-resident students are enrolled only in addition to qualified California students, not in place of them.”

Even with an expected downsurge of admissions in the UC campuses, foreign interests are still high with Keystone Academic Solutions’ State of Student Recruitment USA 2021 report showing 36% of international students prefer California as their study destination. As a result, international students will soon face greater competition in securing a seat in their preferred UC university.
