Trinity Western University (TWU) announced a campus-wide Community Day of Learning on Sept. 30 to foster greater awareness of indigenous history and culture and honor residential schools’ legacy.
As Canada’s premier Christian university, TWU is also committed to enjoining its community members in establishing a positive relationship with the Indigenous Peoples of Canada.

“We call upon the federal government, in collaboration with Aboriginal peoples, to establish, as a statutory holiday, a National Day for Truth and Reconciliation to honour Survivors, their families, and communities, and ensure that public commemoration of the history and legacy of residential schools remains a vital component,” the report noted.
For students, staff, and faculty to take part in the Community Day of Learning, the institution will cancel both morning and afternoon classes on that day.
According to University Siya:m Patricia Victor, campus-wide learning is a day when the whole TWU community can come together. From this, members of the TWU community learn the shared history, address the injustices, and commit to working closely toward a future where people honor God through respect and dignity for all, regardless of their background.
Victor added that TWU’s acknowledgment that the university is on the traditional, ancestral, unceded territory of Stó:ló people “is one step towards walking together in a good way.” As Victor puts it, walking together with one mind, one heart, and one purpose.
Meanwhile, President Mark Husbands highlighted that TWU has a vision of equipping every graduate to think truthfully, act justly, and live faithfully for the common good of the people.
Husbands said that the university community members hold a moral responsibility to practice truthfulness, honesty, justice, and care, especially with the indigenous peoples of Canada.
