With roughly 3,260 first-year students expected to move in and begin their study at the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), a record number of new students have made their way to the Gordon Field House and Activities Center during the annual Tiger Walk and New Student Convocation on Wednesday.
The faculty, staff, and members of the RIT Pep Band led the cheering and welcoming of the university’s new members of approximately 4,500 first-year, transfer, and graduate students.

Compared to the Tiger Walk from the previous years, this year’s tradition has been moved inside because of forecasted thunderstorms. While last year’s New Student Convocation went virtual because of COVID-19 pandemic health and safety protocols, this year’s convocation immediately followed the Tiger Walk.
According to Ellen Granberg, RIT’s provost and senior vice president for Academic Affairs, the new students of the institution will be beginning their educational journey alongside students who are bright, ambitious, and eager to learn as they are.
She added that each student would bring something unique that will enrich and contribute greatly to the RIT community, branding the batch as “the most academically prepared” with an average SAT score of 1326, an average ACT score of 30, and an average GPA of 93.2 percent.
Moreover, RIT has recorded 42 new students with a perfect SAT math score, 14 had a perfect SAT or ACT score, and 62 graduated first in their respective high school graduating classes.
The additional population is composed of students coming from 49 states and 37 foreign countries, such as Canada, India, China, and Nigeria.
Following the annual Tiger Walk and New Student Convocation, students will proceed with the more traditional instruction in most of the academic classes and other activities on the campus.
Most spaces in RIT will operate at nearly full capacity for instruction, campus programs, research, and other services. Courses, which were formerly instructed as A/B splits, will be delivered mainly in a face-to-face approach.
