After the 18-month travel hiatus due to the pandemic, Keyano College has finally welcomed the latest class of international students, drawing a significant increase of over 25 percent from the previous academic year.

Aside from the program offerings that lead to certificates, diplomas, certificates of qualifications, and baccalaureate degrees, the college also supports professional development in the areas of arts, sciences, education, business, health and safety, and transportation. These have attracted more than 175 international students from 30 different countries.

Key Takeaways:

  • Keyano College marked a 25 percent increase in the international student population.
  • International students at Keyano College, both new and returning, have finally returned to the campus.
  • Keyano College is eyeing to attract more international students following the latest Canadian government border updates.

Such an increase in the international student population at Keyano College can also result from the latest Canadian government border updates that allowed both new and returning students to travel and attend in-person classes.

Keyano College is also working closely with Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo Economic Development & Tourism to attract more international students into the region to revive the state of the international education sector in Canada and create shared economic value for the region.

According to Sandra Efu, the college’s director of Student Services and International Education, while they were not able to meet incoming international students since the onset of the pandemic, they are now glad to welcome them directly at the airport to ensure that their new residents get the best start for their whole student experience moving forward.

Keyano College offers a free airport pickup service for international students arriving in Fort McMurray. Especially during this time when health and safety protocols are in place, the college will provide transportation from the airport to the place of quarantine.

The college also helps international students transition to life in Alberta, Canada, and succeed at Keyano College through its International Preparatory Course (IPC) that covers skills for academic success, Canadian history and culture, time and stress management, and Keyano College policies and procedures, among others.
