The American University (AU) recently welcomed a new graduate certificate in Social Innovation for Global Impact, which was launched by the university’s School of International Service (SIS) in response to current students’ strong interest in social innovation.

This new program combines entrepreneurship and innovation with social activism, and gears up students with competencies in working across sectors to address problems through new and innovative means.

Key Takeaways:

  • The Graduate Certificate in Social Innovation for Global Impact is a new addition to the programs offered by American University.
  • The offering of this new graduate certificate is rooted in the current students’ strong interest in social innovation.
  • The graduate certificate is available for current graduate degree students at AU and students with a bachelor’s degree or equivalent from an accredited institution.

Having both a curricular and co-curricular component, the Graduate Certificate in Social Innovation for Global Impact emphasizes peacekeeping, human rights, international development, and governance.

The graduate certificate is available to students with a bachelor’s degree or equivalent from an accredited institution and students currently enrolled in an American University graduate degree program.

The certificate program requires students to complete three graduate-level courses and a graduate capstone related to social innovation.

Since the courses are all practitioner-oriented, students will experience hands-on, real-world components, such as community research, experiential learning, and consulting projects.

In addition to the required coursework, participation in at least one co-curricular professional activity in the field of social innovation away from campus may be necessary. Activities include completing an internship, attending conferences, doing volunteer work, taking free online short courses, or self-study.

According to Professor Robert Tomasko, apart from the tools and techniques that students will learn from the program, having the certificate will also make them stand out to prospective employers in the job market after graduation.
