As the World Health Organization (WHO) expressed concern toward misinformation amid the pandemic, Asia Pacific University of Technology and Innovation’s (APU) Media and Communication program gears up students with media literacy skills to combat the ‘infodemic.’

APU’s Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Media and Communication Studies is more than just a media and communication studies degree; enrolled students can apply for the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) L5 Award in Management and Leadership in the United Kingdom (UK).

Key Takeaways:

  • APU offers a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Media and Communication Studies.
  • APU also provides an APU-DMU Dual Degree Scheme, allowing students to obtain two diplomas and transcripts upon graduation.
  • APU’s program allows students to combat the ‘infodemic’ through media literacy competencies.

Aside from that, students can enroll in the APU-DMU Dual Degree Scheme, which means they will obtain two diplomas and transcripts upon graduation, one from APU and the other from De Montfort University (DMU) in the UK.

Fahizah Shamsuddin, the director of the APU Bachelor of Arts in Media and Communication Studies program, recognizes that media literacy needs to be integrated into the public consciousness.

In fact, there have been calls to make media and communication studies a mandatory subject beginning in secondary school to educate people about the dangers of fake news. Students at APU learn about media literacy through classes such as contemporary media studies, crisis communication, and journalism.

In their media and communication programs, APU emphasizes a well-balanced theoretical and practical element of training. Its media literacy training gives students and instructors a common approach to critical thinking, enhancing their ability to express and distribute their ideas.
