The Australian College of Applied Psychology (ACAP), in partnership with James Cook University, will be launching the Australasian Mental Health and Higher Education Webinar Series: Student Experiences on Sept. 8 to discuss mental health in higher education.

Across four webinars, the Australasian Mental Health and Higher Education Collaboration (AMHHEC) will explore “the tapestry of mental health in higher education,” with each webinar focusing on a different mental health experience: academic, student, research, and professional and technical staff.

Key Takeaways:

  • The Australian College of Applied Psychology (ACAP) and James Cook University will discuss mental health in higher education in a webinar.
  • The webinar will tackle a different mental health experience through the lenses of academic, student, research, and professional and technical staff.
  • The webinar series was launched in response to the increasing need for action in the area of mental health and wellness in the higher education sector.

The webinar series will delve into mental health research, strategies for meaningful action, and will also be providing a forum for open discussion and engagement.

Focusing on the experiences of students in higher education, the webinar will be discussing the role universities and the government play in facilitating mental health and well-being, how COVID-19 impacted learning experience at present and moving forward, and strategies that helped them cope with the changing higher education landscape.

ACAP’s Margaret Anne Carter facilitated the first webinar on July 7 with over 200 registrants and tackled the academic staff’s mental health and wellness experiences. Three presenters shared relevant insights on the academic staff’s challenges.

Rachael Field, Professor of Law at Bond University, focused her discussion on academic well-being and the issues relating to the quality of working life for academics.

Stephen Naylor, chair of the Academic Board at James Cook University, highlighted in his discussion the need to establish a range of support mechanisms to assist students through the difficult stages of their tertiary journey.

Finally, Vivienne Browne, principal adviser, Government Relations and Policy at Orygen, discussed the Australian Mental Health Framework that applies a whole-of-university, settings-based approach to creating and supporting learning environments conducive to good mental health and well-being.

According to Carter, these topics are important to be discussed as research has shown how mental health and wellness support for students and staff in higher education has significantly contributed to their success, performance, and satisfaction.

AMHHEC, established in 2017, organized the webinar series to address the increasing need for action in the area of mental health and wellness in the higher education sector. Interested participants may join the second webinar here.
