Adelphi University has become one of the first educational institutions to offer a year-long degree program leading to New York state’s new computer science teaching certificate with the launch of its Master of Arts in STEAM Teaching and Learning program.
When the first students begin the 30-credit degree program this summer, they will have the option of choosing from four concentrations: scientific education, math education, computer science education, or STEAM studies.

The Manhattan Imagine X Institute, or MIXI, a research and practice center created on Adelphi’s Manhattan campus, is home to the STEAM Teaching and Learning MA program.
In a new maker space on Adelphi’s Manhattan campus, students will take six core courses together: three in lab method and pedagogies, and three examining the theories and impacts of science, math, and technology in school and society.
Adelphi students will also take three courses in their chosen concentration, with students following the computer science education track, taking courses in programming, web/multimedia programming, and information security.
Through this program, students will complete degree requirements by completing a master’s degree project or by student teaching in local partner schools.
Students studying computer science education will be placed in elementary and secondary schools as student teachers, while science and math teachers will be placed in middle and high schools.
The program is meant to complement a computer science education degree. Students will be able to graduate—and seek employment—more rapidly with only 30 credits required.
