Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT) reopened its campus on Sept. 27. It started the academic year with the induction of new and second-year students who have been pursuing their higher education exclusively online during the previous academic year.

The university carefully planned and prepared for the in-campus transition of instruction and learning this Semester 1 for Sept. 2021. DkIT worked intensively to employ a whole-of-sector approach in implementing a safe return to campus.

Key Takeaways:

  • DkIT opens a new academic year with the induction of new and second-year students.
  • This year’s induction also included second-year students since their study has been exclusively online during the past academic year.
  • The campus return at DkIT aligns with the safe return plan outlined by the higher educational institutions in the area.

The Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science (DFHERIS) published “A Safe Return To On-Site Further And Higher Education And Research,” a plan to ensure students’ safe return to campus, on June 15.

The safe reopening plan, which was inclusively formed and endorsed by public health authorities, is underpinned by three primary pillars.

The three pillars include higher education as an ‘essential service’ by the government; the presence of an overwhelming desire from students for a safe return to campus; and the opportunity for the majority of adults, including college students, to get fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

DkIT has remained true to its commitment to maximizing the on-campus student experience and activities for the next academic year in adherence to the sectoral approach outlined by higher education institutions.

As a result, this year’s induction included second-year students who have little knowledge of the campus or their classmates since their college experience has been exclusively online.

According to DkIT President Michael Mulvey, DkIT continued to put in place all the measures advised by public health officials to make the return to campus safe and sustainable for all their students, staff, and the wider community.

While all the public health protocols will be followed on-campus by staff and students, everyone must wear a mask at all times when indoors.
