INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine has recognized Adelphi​​​ University’s Collegiate Science and Technology Entry Program/Science and Technology Entry Program (CSTEP/STEP) in the 2021 Inspiring Programs in STEM Award.

Being the oldest diversity and inclusion publication in higher education, INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine gives the award to colleges and universities that have played a contributory role in assisting students from underrepresented sectors to enter the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

Adelphi University has a strong support system for equity, diversity, and social justice. Apart from the office that helps sustain these efforts through the Diversity Committee and mentoring and recognition programs, the university also provides services and resources to support pathways for STEM to historically underrepresented students.

This is the fourth time in recent years that the university has received this award. The first was in 2018 for the Horace G. McDonell Science Research Fellowship program, then in 2019 for the New York Noyce STEAM Pipeline Program, and then in 2020 for the physics department’s Lab 4 Kids program.

According to Sabita Nayak, Adelphi project director of CSTEP/STEP, such recognition will drive them to expand opportunities for collaboration, funding, and recruitment for students and faculty, leading to an efficient bridging of the diversity gap in STEM.

Adelphi’s CSTEP/STEP addressed the disparities through mentoring, retention, teaching,  professional development, and research opportunities. In the past 10 years, the program’s enrollment rate doubled, serving more school districts in the community.

In addition, the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion is one of many places on campus contributing to Adelphi’s welcoming atmosphere. Looking forward to a full and safe return to in-person instruction, activities, and campus life experiences, Adelphi University continues to offer cross-cultural and diversity-focused educational experiences to help students of diverse backgrounds succeed academically.

Adelphi University is also strengthening its commitment to support dialogues and activities that demonstrate how it values and supports diversity, ensuring that it continues to be the model for a socially just and inclusive institution.
