As the commencement of classes draws near, roughly 3,260 first-year students are expected to move in, attend orientation, and begin their study at the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT).

Starting Sunday through Tuesday, RIT will be welcoming a thousand students per day who will attend New Student Convocation. Upon returning to the campus, the students will be exposed to various rotating social and educational orientation programs, contingent on the day they move in.

Key Takeaways:

  • Roughly 3,260 new students are anticipated to enter the Rochester Institute of Technology.
  • RIT has prepared week-long activities to welcome the moving in, orientation, and commencement of study of new students.
  • The week-long activities include orientation programs, sales, new student convocation, and the Tiger Walk.

With over 3,000 students returning to the RIT campus during the three-day timeframe, the institution had a record number of freshmen—with more than 250 new students enrolled compared to the previous year.

Aside from the orientation programs that await new students, they will also have the chance to visit the popular “Goodbye, Goodbuy!” sale from Monday through Friday at the Gene Polisseni Center to pick up items at thrift store prices.

Meanwhile, on Wednesday, the students will experience the Tiger Walk as they file as a group to the Gordon Field House for the New Student Convocation, which will be open to faculty and staff as long as participants wear masks or other safety face coverings.

Here, students will have the chance to listen to equally respected speakers such as Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs Ellen Granberg, Senior Vice President for Student Affairs Sandra Johnson, Student Government President Lucas Randrianarivelo, and RIT President David Munson.

Students will also have a comprehensive overview of the student experience through the student leaders.

Finally, Amanda Bao, an associate professor in the College of Engineering Technology and recent recipient of the Eisenhart Award for Outstanding Teaching, will deliver her keynote speech.

The week-long activities will be concluded on Sunday by a Wellness Fair and Carnival in the field house, exposing students to the institution’s wellness programs and services in a safe and engaging environment. The walk and convocation will be live-streamed for family members and others to watch.
