University Canada West (UCW) has chosen to shift all classes online for January because of a recent rise in COVID-19 cases in British Columbia and concerns raised by students and faculty.

According to Sheldon Levy, UCW Interim President and Vice-Chancellor, the institution decided to relocate all classes virtually for the next month after the number of COVID-19 cases nearly doubled in a week.

Key Takeaways:

  • After the number of COVID-19 cases nearly doubled in a week, UCW decided to move all classes online for the following month.
  • The Winter term begins on Jan. 10 and all on-campus classes and the New Student Orientation (Jan. 4-7) will be transferred online for January.

On Jan. 10, the Winter term begins. For the month of January, all on-campus classes and student services, including New Student Orientation (Jan. 4-7), will be moved online.

The Senior Leadership Team at UCW will continue to monitor the situation and BC’s Provincial Health Officer’s announcements before making a judgment on a possible return to in-person learning later in January.

Levy assured that they will continue to monitor the situation and base their judgments on advice and the most up-to-date data from BC’s provincial health authority and Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Training.

It can be recalled that most UCW students have begun attending in-person classes at the university’s new Vancouver House Campus on Oct. 12 which can accommodate up to 3,400 students.

During the Fall 2021 term, UCW continued to implement several health and safety measures at the campuses.

The university also brought back Student Health Ambassadors. They help carry out UCW and BC Government protocols during the COVID-19 pandemic so that the university can provide safety and peace of mind to students, staff, and faculty while on campus.
