For the fall semester, the University of Massachusetts Amherst welcomed about 4,900 students. The batch of students boasts outstanding academic achievements and is considered the most diverse group in the history of the institution.

UMass Amherst joins the trend similar to other institutions like the University of Dayton, recording the most diverse student population in their respective histories. This year, UMass Amherst marked an increase in student enrollment from underrepresented communities and those under African, Latino/Hispanic, Asian, Hawaiian/Pacific Islander, and Native American (ALANA) descent.

Key Takeaways:

  • Approximately 4,900 new students have commenced their fall classes at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
  • UMass Amherst makes history as they welcome the most diverse and highly outstanding student population in terms of average GPA, ACT, and SAT scores.
  • UMass Amherst received 42,110 student applications for this year’s entering class.

With an increase of 37 percent among ALANA students and 19 percent among underrepresented students, the university has the most diverse student body to this date.

Meanwhile, 54 percent of the class comprises female students, an increase of nearly 2 percent compared with the previous year. UMass Amherst has also welcomed about 1,200 new transfer students to the campus community.

Despite the class size being somewhat smaller than last year by about 125 students, Chancellor Kumble Subbaswamy said that the university attracts students regardless of their backgrounds or location from different parts of the world. In fact, UMass Amherst has recorded 42,110 applications for this year’s entering class.

This year’s incoming class also boasts a solid academic record with an average high school grade point average of 4.00. Moreover, the average ACT score of the class is again 31.8, and the combined SAT score for incoming students increased from 1401/1600 to 1420/1600.

Recognizing the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic to its potential students as well as their families, UMass Amherst instituted a test-optional policy temporarily, and only about one-third of the class has a test score.
