As an institution that prioritizes diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) among individuals, Florida State University (FSU)’s fully online Bachelor of Arts in Women’s and Gender Studies (WGS) prepares its students for a wide range of transformational career paths in the future.

Following the actions of various organizations, educational institutions, and government offices in setting up DEI offices to address the gaps, FIU perceives that its degree in women and gender studies would be fully applicable and necessary to effect societal change.

Key Takeaways:

  • Florida State University champions diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • FSU offers a fully online program on women’s and gender studies.
  • Graduates of women’s and gender studies are in high demand in different industries such as law, medicine, teaching, community development, and research.

According to Alexandra Cornelius, director of FIU’s Center for Women’s and Gender Studies, such a progressively growing trend is the root of increasing demand for graduates to address these themes with impact.

The demand for expertise in gender and social justice issues is growing across the professions, including law, medicine, social services, teaching, community development, counseling, public policy, and research.

FIU’s online program is an interdisciplinary study of women and gender from cross-cultural and historical perspectives. Students will explore in depth how women’s lives have been shaped by history, culture, nationality, class, and other elements of diversity.

For Cornelius, the WGS degree will gear up students in bringing communities together to identify and try to find solutions for the inequalities people experience in terms of education, health, and housing.

Students who will be pursuing the program will enable them to be advocates for the LGBTQ+ community, immigrants, minoritized communities, and survivors of domestic violence and sex trafficking.

In essence, the whole interdisciplinary study on women and gender will offer students with critical thinking tools that they can use to examine various public policies and how it impacts these communities.

A Women’s and Gender Studies major develops highly valued skills, including critical thinking, research, analysis, and presentation skills. But more than the career trajectories that await finishers of the FIU’s WGS degree, the program provides students with a foundational framework for a career helping and advocating for others.
