Cleveland State University (CSU) recently received a generous grant from The George Gund Foundation to provide 120 Say Yes Cleveland scholarships to recipients from the Cleveland Metropolitan School District (CMSD). The Say Yes to Education Cleveland initiative, which began in 2019, provides qualifying CMSD graduates with college tuition scholarships.

Key Takeaways:

  • CSU received a grant from the George Gund Foundation.

  • The grant will provide 120 Say Yes Cleveland scholarship recipients from the Cleveland Metropolitan School District (CMSD).

  • The Say Yes to Education Cleveland initiative grants college tuition scholarships to CMSD graduates who meet specific criteria.

The program’s achievement is impressive, with 100 percent of the students in the first year and 97 percent of students in the second year continuing their studies at CSU.

By integrating a residential experience with academic support, graduation coaching, and other comprehensive wraparound services, the university’s program helps students flourish and graduate.

CSU received a US$5 million donation in honor of retiring Gund Foundation President David Abbott, which will help students with other critical matters.

The grant will assist 30 students per year for four years, covering the full cost of room and board for first-year students and sophomores and half of the cost of room and board for juniors and seniors who stay on campus.

According to Abbott, students from CMSD who attend college fare better if they reside on campus, especially if they have access to intensive academic support, mentorship, coaching, and wraparound services.
