The signature of a Memorandum of Understanding signaled the transition of the current program delivered by Bangor University in partnership with Cardiff University to a new autonomous curriculum in 2026.

This new arrangement represents an all-Wales approach to offering a comprehensive medical education program in North Wales while also assisting the Welsh Government in implementing its 2021-2026 Government Program.

Key Takeaways:

  • Bangor University’s present program, delivered in partnership with Cardiff University, will be replaced with a new autonomous curriculum in 2026, according to the new MoU.
  • This new partnership represents an all-Wales effort to provide a comprehensive medical education program in North Wales.
  • More medical and health professionals will be trained in North Wales and Powys as a result of the collaboration.

The Welsh Government has already set up a multi-agency Programme Board to help establish the North Wales Medical School.

The institutions will now work together to engage the General Medical Council in order to facilitate a smooth transition from the C21 North Wales curriculum to a new independent Bangor University-led curriculum.

The universities will also collaborate in Medical and Health disciplines to ensure sustainability, including through the all-Wales Clinical Trials Unit.

This will take place while providing new workforce and knowledge for the Health and Medical professions and taking into account the unique characteristics, languages, and cultures of North Wales.

According to Bangor University Vice-Chancellor, Professor Iwan Davies, they are ecstatic to be collaborating with Cardiff University in order to realize their vision for the North Wales Medical School.

With the growing demand in North Wales for an integrated health, care, and wellness system, the establishment of a medical school is critical.

The collaboration will also allow more medical and health professionals to be trained across North Wales and Powys, resulting in a greater impact on NHS service levels and a comprehensive environment for multilingual teaching, learning, and placement capacity across our communities.
