Adelphi University is constructing a new Multicultural Center, which is hoped to foster diversity and inclusivity among the members of the campus community.

Located on the third floor of Ruth S. Harley University Center (UC), the Multicultural Center is a hub where students can gather to encourage cross-cultural interaction and dialogue and provide a platform for them to share their socio-cultural identities.

Key Takeaways:

  • Adelphi University’s new Multicultural Center is already under construction.
  • The new facility will serve as a multipurpose area where students can engage in social dialogues and conduct cultural activities.
  • The Multicultural Center was conceptualized to develop a sense of belongingness among the members of the campus community.

Though the project is still under construction, Adelphi is already encouraging students to prepare for the Multicultural Center since it will be a place to collaborate with staff, faculty, and alumni in initiating various programs, activities, and cultural gatherings.

According to Anna Zinko, assistant dean for students and community engagement of the multicultural center, the construction of Adelphi’s Multicultural Center only fortifies the university’s strong commitment to being a model for diversity and inclusion.

Zinko also considers the Multicultural Center as a centralized location where people can quickly identify as a place where they belong.

Meanwhile, for Sentwali Bakari, vice president for student affairs, the Multicultural Center will establish a sense of belongingness and active campus engagement among students. More than these, it will strengthen Adelphi’s multicultural awareness and appreciation.

It can be recalled that the Adelphi University’s Collegiate Science and Technology Entry Program/Science and Technology Entry Program (CSTEP/STEP) in the 2021 Inspiring Programs in STEM Award has been recognized by the INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine for bridging the diversity gap.

Once the construction is completed, the Multicultural Center will be a multipurpose facility that will include an open lounge, staff offices, and a conference space equipped with computers and printers.

It will share the floor with other facilities such as a mindfulness center, which is also under construction, a testing center for the Student Access Office, and the Interfaith Center.
