A Public Interest Technology University Network (PIT-UN) Challenge gave the Rochester Institute of Technology a grant that will be instrumental in helping underrepresented individuals in the computing workforce launch new careers in cybersecurity.

Through this grant, RIT plans to develop a Cyber-Protection Apprenticeship pilot program that provides paid work experience to people entering the cybersecurity workforce.

Key Takeaways:

  • RIT received a grant from the Public Interest Technology University Network (PIT-UN).
  • The grant will go to the development of a Cyber-Protection Apprenticeship pilot program.
  • The program will help underrepresented individuals in the computing workforce launch new careers in cybersecurity.

From the graduates of the institution’s Cybersecurity Bootcamp, a diverse group of apprentices will be chosen, including people from different backgrounds and those who are deaf and hard of hearing.

The 15-week immersive training program will prepare professionals for critical entry-level cybersecurity roles moving forward regardless of their backgrounds.

The cybersecurity industry needs more qualified professionals, and RIT’s Cyber-Protection Apprenticeship pilot program will address this by creating a more inclusive career pipeline for cybersecurity workers.

Starting March 2022, RIT’s Cyber-Protection Apprenticeship pilot program will hire six apprentices, with at least three apprentices who are deaf or hard of hearing. The institution is quite particular with its programs and initiatives aimed at helping people who are deaf or hard of hearing.
