To respond to the provincial need for more health care workers, specifically the need for more nurses in Ontario, Niagara College Canada has expanded enrollment for its Practical Nursing program this Fall term.

The college’s Fall intake includes 90 students, an increase from its usual intake of 60 in its regular delivery stream, in addition to a class of 30 in the alternate delivery stream who attend classes on evenings and weekends.

Key Takeaways:

  • Niagara College Canada announced its expansion of enrollment for its Practical Nursing program this Fall term.
  • The college did this to extend its support to the community by putting skilled health care workers in hospitals, community agencies, and long-term care facilities.
  • The college’s Applied Health Institute has ramped up operations to seven days a week this Fall term to accommodate an increase in students.

Niagara College’s Applied Health Institute has pushed making the operations run for seven days a week for this term to ensure that it can accommodate the increase in students at the School of Nursing and Personal Support Worker (PSW) Studies.

This is an opportunity for the college to extend its support to the community, according to Carolyn Triemstra, the dean of Community and Health Studies.

Even before the enrollment expansion, current students are already making a difference in the community with hundreds of Practical Nursing students. Currently, they have about 30 PSW students working in clinical placements.

Apart from the hospitals, students are also placed in community agencies and long-term care facilities.

Niagara College increased its Practical Nursing cohort by 30 this Fall and another 30 this Winter term. Moreover, the college has also taken in over 140 Personal Support Worker students in two accelerated streams this Spring and those enrolled in the regular PSW program.

The college also underwent lab expansions to accommodate more students and to gain both short- and long-term benefits moving forward.
