Canada – International students interested in pursuing their education at the approved Designated Learning Institutions (DLI) within Ontario will be pleased to know that the province’s borders remain open. There were talks of an impending travel ban last week but, so far, no announcements have been made.

Eligible international students are free to begin or continue their studies in Ontario even amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. Guidelines for determining a student’s eligibility are the following:

  • The student should have an approved study permit.
  • The student must be traveling to Canada for a non-discretionary or non-optional purpose.
  • The student must be enrolled in any of the DLI that has a government-approved COVID-19 readiness plan. Students may check if their preferred school is included here.

Incoming foreign students to Ontario will not be required to be tested for COVID-19 after they complete the mandatory 14-day quarantine period. That is one less expense for them to shoulder.

  • The COVID-19 tests will be administered only in the following periods:
  • During pre-departure (federally mandated)
  • Upon arrival in Canada;
  • On the 8th day of the student’s quarantine period

During the 14-day quarantine upon arrival to Canada, the first three days will be spent in one of the hotels that have been designated as an official quarantine center. For the remaining 11 days, students may choose among the government-approved quarantine plan providers, like Languages Canada’s Study Safe Corridor -Travel Safe, which offers an all-in quarantine package for international students.

International students are highly advised to register for a COVID-19 vaccination in Ontario. All age groups should be eligible to receive the vaccine by July 2021. For now, only the following are eligible:

  • 40 years old and older
  • Students that are 18 years old and older residing in certain hotspots

Ontario, one of the 13 provinces and territories of Canada, is a sought-after study abroad destination. Here are some of the province’s top institutions of higher learning for international students:
