The University of the Pacific launched on Nov. 18 its new two-year Entry Level Master of Science in Nursing program, an accelerated graduate nursing degree program for people with a bachelor’s degree in any field.
Recent research by the UCSF Health Workforce Research Center on Long-Term Care found that the state currently has a shortage of 40,567 registered nurses. The new program aims to address a nursing shortage in the region and across the state.

According to Pacific President Christopher Callahan, many places continue to be underserved, particularly during the pandemic where the nursing shortage was most prominent. To address the growing demand for skilled nurses, the university will go forward aggressively with this new nursing program.
The program, which will be available on Pacific’s Sacramento campus, will accept 40 new nursing students twice a year, for a total of 80 students every year.
The program will have a community-driven focus, with clinical rotations throughout the Central Valley, to return highly qualified professionals to serve the community.
Nursing students will graduate with a master’s degree, training for licensing as a registered nurse (RN), and a public health certificate, which will provide them with a broader understanding of the health care profession.
Across Pacific’s three campuses, the program offers a diabetes management specialization as well as interprofessional education.
Applications for the program are now being accepted for the April 2022 semester.
