Diversity and higher education are among the many focuses of the investiture of the University of the Pacific’s 26th president on Oct. 20, tackling other priorities and fostering campus and community involvement.

Five one-hour-long symposia, scheduled on Oct. 18 and 19, have been designed to highlight the university’s values: Diversity and Inclusion, Student Centered, Academic Excellence, Respect and Civility, and Community Engagement, Integrity and Accountability.

Key Takeaways:

  • The University of the Pacific will be holding the inauguration of its 26th president, Christopher Callahan.
  • Five one-hour-long symposia have been designed to highlight the university’s values.
  • Diversity and higher education are among the symposia topics to be featured in the inauguration.

President Christopher Callahan has revealed the symposia topics for the investiture, including:

  • Diversity and Higher Education
  • The Master Teacher
  • Public Service through Experiential Education
  • The College Student Experience in the 2020s
  • The Future of College Athletics

For instance, the Diversity and Higher Education session will focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion and how they drive policy, innovation, and student success. According to Callahan, the panels will provide expertise and variety in the conversations.

Pacific’s president has also highlighted the involvement of students and faculty in so many experiential learning efforts and in serving communities. These efforts include administering vaccines, providing legal help to those who cannot afford it, or providing dental care to thousands in the Bay Area.

The investiture ceremony is almost a year and a half late because of the pandemic. Still, it is of institutional importance as it serves as a reminder for the university community to embrace its values and traditions.

Pacific’s students, faculty, and staff are invited to attend the 3 p.m. ceremony on Oct. 20 at Knoles lawn on the Stockton Campus.
