Cypress College, a business career college based in Medicine Hat, Alberta, with an additional campus in Brooks, presented a wide range of career choices and study opportunities for international students in an Abcodo webinar on Oct. 8.

Vipul Keshwani served as the webinar facilitator while David Martin, Upendra Vasdeva, and Jaya Singh were the presenters for the virtual gathering of representatives from the international higher education sector.

Key Takeaways:

  • The Abcodo webinar featured career choices and study opportunities at Cypress College.
  • Cypress College in Canada is approved by a provincial or territorial government to host international students.
  • The college started recruiting international students in 2017 at the request of its employer partners.

Cypress College became a designated learning institution (DLI) in 2016, which means it was approved by a provincial or territorial government to host international students. Its student profile is composed of students interested in Hospitality and Hotel Restaurant Management.

The college puts student satisfaction and career success at the highest priority. These are materialized through the all-out support and assistance the institution extends to its potential students.

While the institution has been training mostly domestic Canadian students since 2001, Cypress College started recruiting international students in 2017 at the request of its employer partners.

The vocational career college has grown and developed as a higher education institution by offering employment services to Canadians in partnership with the Alberta government.

Cypress College boasts its unique relationship with local industries, stemming from its long-standing ability to help businesses recruit and train talent to meet acute labor shortages in Alberta.

Moreover, since the college has established a fortified connection with local businesses, students are brought closer to many career opportunities after they graduate.

The Abcodo webinar highlighted how Cypress College is uniquely positioned to connect international students and employers toward job vacancies based on its regional market.

The Cypress College pathway Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) work permit is also set apart from the traditional post-study work permit. The LMIA is a document that an employer in Canada may need to get before hiring a foreign worker.

The college has assured its willingness to recruit students and apply for an LMIA exemption to hire them after a year of study.

During the webinar, the college also expressed its desire to recruit the same kind of students that its employer partners would like to hire after graduation.
